Known for her ability to blend genres seamlessly, Whipp is more than just a DJ—she’s a creator, an innovator, and an artist on a mission to connect with her audience through sound.
From New Haven to Worldwide: The Journey of DJ Whipp Appeal
Hailing from New Haven, CT, DJ Whipp Appeal is a true jack-of-all-trades. While her main talent lies with her expertise in plant medicine “I went to school for it and everything” she adds, she’s also skilled in a variety of creative fields, from crocheting to playlist curation. But when it comes to the DJ booth, she’s in a league of her own.
Whipp has always been surrounded by music. From theater and dance to instruments and singing, music has always been a constant in her life. But DJ’ing was a path that found her. "DJ’ing chose me," she says. "I didn’t go looking for it, but it made sense when it came into my life." The art of DJ’ing gave her an outlet to express herself in a way she had never experienced before, and she's been riding that wave ever since.
A Moment of Magic: Mashups + Pregame
When asked about the most memorable event she’s DJ’d in the past few months, Whipp doesn’t hesitate: Mashups + Pregame stands out as a game-changer. "Pregame was so dope and intimate," Whipp recalls. "It was the first time I truly freestyled in a way that amazed not only myself but the crowd. It was the first event where I felt completely grounded, present, and secure within myself." The vibe at Mashups was electric—playing for a new crowd was nerve-wracking, but Whipp’s confidence and love for the craft shone through. "The crowd was amazing. I left with new supporters, and now when I’m out and about, people recognize me from Mashups. It was a pivotal moment in my career!"
For Whipp, it’s not just about playing music—it’s about creating an experience, connecting with the crowd, and feeling that energy. "It’s about being present in the moment and letting the music take over," she says.
Going Viral: A Global Moment
One of the biggest milestones in Whipp’s career came when one of her sets went viral on YouTube. "I cried," she admits. The love and support that poured in from fans all over the world was overwhelming. "I never thought that set would go viral. I was picking apart every little detail, but somehow it resonated with so many people."
From the UK to the States, Whipp’s set garnered attention, and fans began to reach out, asking when she would be playing next. "It was so affirming," Whipp shares. "It confirmed that I’m aligned with my purpose. I feel truly blessed to have this platform and to connect with people from all over the world." "Shout out to everyone who supports me and continues to reach out to me since that video, and shout out to Sonic Suite for giving me the platform to express myself to the world."
Navigating the Struggles: Overcoming Self-Doubt
Despite her growing success, Whipp admits that being a DJ—comes with its challenges. "The pressure I put on myself can be overwhelming. I never want to be perceived as ‘trash’ or not taken seriously," she confesses. "It’s a trend right now, and people aren’t always in it for the right reasons, so I try my best to stay authentic and show my skills."
Whipp’s biggest struggle, she says, is the anxiety that comes from striving for perfection. "I’m my worst critic.” "I always want to give my best, and sometimes that brings me anxiety before a gig." To combat this, she has developed a pre-performance routine: yoga, breath work, and positive affirmations help her center herself before she hits the decks.
"I also used to seek outward validation, but I’ve learned to view the love I receive as affirmations," she says. "Now, I trust myself more and know that I’m on the right path."
Grateful for the Journey
Looking back on her career, Whipp is filled with gratitude. "I’m grateful for my life, my ancestors, my family and friends, my support system," she says. "I’m thankful for being able to do what I love every day and for letting go of what doesn’t serve me." Whipp has learned to trust the process, even when things feel uncertain. "I’ve learned to do things scared," she says, reflecting on her journey. "And letting go of fear has been one of the most powerful things I’ve done."
Advice for Aspiring DJs
For those hoping to follow in her footsteps, Whipp has one key piece of advice: “Take time to learn the fundamentals.”She emphasizes that DJing is an art, and like any art form, it requires practice and patience. "DJing is like a house," she explains. "Every house may look different, but the foundation is the same. Understand the fundamentals of music, learn your ‘why,’ and give yourself time to grow."
The first album that your brought? Take us back to that moment — share any anecdotes or memories associated with it
This wasn’t my first album bought, however this was the most memorable one! During Covid, I fell in LOVE with SIRs Chasing Summer Album from top to bottom! I remember buying his album in Vinyl and spending the extra money to get a special edition Vinyl which was the first time I ever spent over $50 for any type of vinyl (I was so used to thrifting them). I remember receiving it in the mail and inspecting with excitement. That was the first time I’d ever see a special edition vinyl that was not the classic black! It was orange, and the case was so detailed, I couldn’t stop listening to that album and it’s still one of my favorites. It made me want to buy more and take collecting more seriously and it was up from there!
